As a photographic artist,
Sarah Crew’s primary interest is in how photography provides the ability to produce alternative realities, enabling
commentary on social issues.
She also
uses performance aspects in her work and a long running character she created to assist in her storytelling, and ensuring
she controls both what is in-front and behind the lens.
The topical social issues are explored through an investigative approach, the photograph is a visual discussion
point for the artist during the project development. In conjunction the sometimes kitsch and often humorous photographs are
also an opportunity to capture moments in the story, often staged for the camera lens.
Her work is grounded in the topic research which provides a solid base to
jump from as her work takes the audience on a journey, pushing the boundaries of possibility wide open with her unique insight,
creative thinking and passion for storytelling.
On completion of a body of work Crew produces a book or manual to provide a verbal dialogue to enhance the
visual one which provide additional thoughts, feelings, actions and comments on the wider body of work. They often also reflect
both the natural actions and perceived attitudes of the animals portrayed, criss-crossing the viewer between fact and fiction
in a memorable journey.
